I am not far enough along in my own journey to vouch for the code examples included, but after reading this in one sitting over dinner I do feel much more enlightened and maybe a little less disoriented. The text, itself, could use another round of editing, but it's worth tolerating some typos just to know such a book exists this early after the Echo's launch. Keep in mind, the public announcement of the SDK was literally days ago.Rather than focus on a single component of Echo programming, the author overviews design, development and testing. The text offers strategies for approaching the unique user interface that the Echo offers, which is one of only voice interaction under normal operation. (The author also touches on the potential of coordinating and synchronizing online web functionality--apart from the companion Echo app).If you are interested in programming the Amazon Echo, start at http://developer.amazon.com, click the Alexa category, and be prepared to do a lot of digging. When your eyes start glossing over, grab a copy of this book and go treat yourself to an enjoyable, enlightening read of original content that will definitely augment your understanding of what Amazon Echo is capable of, and what approach you might consider to delving into development of this new technology.
Let me start out by saying I'm not a stranger to programming. I program in visual basic and the C language. Now, I am a most definitely a stranger to programming the Amazon Echo. As with a lot of technical authors, this author too seemed to get caught up in the technicalities of a language rather than communicating the actual technique of programming. Before I point out the reasons that I dislike this book, here are a few of the reasons why it does have potential.The GOOD1. It shows you how designing for the echo is much different than a common software program.2. It covers design, development, testing, and business development. This is a big plus, and once I figure out how to actually program Alexa to do things I want her to do I will come back to this book.The BAD This book failed me for several reasons:1. Except for a few screen shots, not one single picture was in the book. This is inexcusable. Photos, drawings, charts are all useful when teaching the beginner.2. Very little sample code. A Beginner doesn't need a page or two of sample code, he needs sample code showing step-by-step every bit of how to do things.3. It relies on existing projects that have changed over the years.4. This book was written in 2015 and as technical books go, it's obsolete. Again I finish reading this book and still cannot program an Alexa skill. And Unfortunately that's why this book gets one star.
This book is basically a commentary on Alexa Skill Development. It describes the what the flow of conversation and interaction should be like in the skill code being developed. It is not a guide on how to actually develop the alexa skill code. It will not guide you through setting up the infrastructure, security certificates, and online tools, needed to support your alexa skill. It also doesn't have a complete code example. It does have a partial example in Java, but none in node.js. At a high level, it will suggest how to pattern the conversation between the user and the skill code to get a more natural feeling interaction.
Too technical for the average user , not clear and way too much history. The app is clearer . I would return it but it's .99 cents
I am sorry to say that I returned this book. I was expecting a 150-200 page book with code examples. What I got was a very very thin book, and all the information contained is readily available from the web.
Simple text to learn how to program amazon echo. In my opinion like most of the first development books of any gadget is pretty simple and it takes you a while to hop onto the learning curve. I feel it is easier if you already understand some concepts of Amazon AWS or at least some node.js concepts. Overall as I say is not bad, but probably better title will come out in the near future.
For the professional developer, this is an effective overview of how to create apps that work with Alexa. The majority of the technical discussion is in Java, focusing on that concern.
