I bought this book as I prepared to the take the GRE again. I have yet to take it, and so I don't know how helpful this book will be, but so far it does not seem to be as thorough or polished as the Barrons Guide. The Barrons Guide gives you a much longer list of vocabularly, goes over all of the math (including the more difficult quesitons) in full detail, and I think it is a bit more difficult. The GRE Kaplan CD pales next to its much better LSAT CD which had a much more friendly user interface. This cd merely directs you to select quizes from a drop down menu... couldn't you at least have created a simple GUI for this program?Still, if you want some additional prep, this books seems tobe alright. But I would definitely go for the Barrons Guide first, mainly for its wonderful vocabulary list (3000 words I believe).
This is the second time that I have taken the GRE. I used Kaplan's GRE prep program each time and made basically the same high score each time. I liked the CD program from a few years ago much better. That one actually had short videos with exercises where you would learn Kaplan's strategies. In this new version, you just have to read the strategies in the book and understand them on your own. If you are not someone who learns well that way, this program may be a struggle. The CD is very basic, with only verbal sections, math sections, and full tests. Still, I like Kaplan's ideas and they have been successful for me both times. Therefore, I would be remiss to not recommend it.
I bought this book and started using it about 6 weeks before my GRE test, which was today. I hadn't taken a standardized test in the past 10 years, but I managed to pull off an above average score in both the Verbal and Quantitative sections. I would say the only negative thing about the book and included software, is the the way the software practice problems are presented. It would be great to see software that would emulate the actual screens of the GRE and behavior of a computer-adaptive test more closely as well as provide scores for all the practice problems, not just the full tests. I think Kaplan pushes you do perform better by setting the bar on their tests much higher than the actual GRE. If you combine this with the free POWERPREP software from the ETS website, I truly believe that you will be more than adequately prepared for the GRE. Good luck!

This book really helped me put things in perspective and clarify some of the things I haven't been able to see or do in the more recent years of school that I'd forgotten about. It gives you little tid bits of HELPFUL info and I greatly recommend it!
Very thorough book - though perhaps not as accurate as the makers of the GRE's test prep.
This book does not specify on the cover or in on-line descriptions that the CD-ROM is not Mac Compatible. It is finally addressed on page xviii. If you had planned on using quizzes on the disc and have a Mac, you will be disappointed.
The book is ok - not great - and gee I wish I had read the last review about Barron's guide a long time ago! I'm thinking about rescheduling my GRE so that I have some time to go out, get a Barron's guide, and use it to study! The Kaplan book is pretty pathetic - I know every single vocab word and all the math principles of all levels - and I still get the same lousy score on the tests. I think that Kaplan uses a sneaky trick - they design their tests so that you will do poorly compared to the real thing, then when you take the real thing and do well - you think "WOW! That was Kaplan!" when really it wasn't. This idea was confirmed by the last reviewer's comment about performance on the GRE.Also, the customer service is awful. My book came with a defective CD, so I emailed them and asked them if they could send me a good one. They made me write my request over again to some other help service, and those people never even RESPONDED! This is the last time I would ever use Kaplan to study for any exam - go for Barron's instead!
