It is not accurate about what is and is not on the test. In the Praxis 1 math section, it gives a correlation coefficient formula that uses Sigma 6 times. This is not on the test. It has the math wrong in some places. It uses polynomial long division to simplify a rational expression, but the long division has a remainder, which means the factor ends in a fractional term. That's not simpler than the original expression. It says the lateral surface of a cone is a quarter circle if laid flat. Actually that's only true if the slant height is 4 times the radius of the base. Cones with other proportions have other shapes of the lateral surface when laid flat. I will have to look up each topic to see if it's actually on the test, and I don't dare show or loan this to any student before reading every word of it, to make sure I have caught all the mistakes.
I have not been through very much of this book yet, but am finding some faulty information already.I began my reading on page 192. In my opinion, the information regarding adjectives and adverbs was sparse. Only 3 of 12 verb tenses are mentioned. By the time I got to page 196 I had decided to write a formal complaint on Amazon. I will now quote the paragraph I found objectionable. I assure you that I quoted this section verbatum, but have capitalized faulty sentence parts."Past Tense is used to indicate that the state of action or being occurred previously. It should be noted, however, that in IN conversational English, speakers frequently use a mix of present and past tense, or SIMPLY present tense when describing events in the past. With that SAID, it is important for writers (and speakers in formal situations) to be consistent and grammatically correct in their verb tenses to avoid confusing readers. Consider the following passage:I scored a goal in our soccer game last Saturday. At the start of the first half, Billy kicked me the ball. I run toward it and strike it directly toward the goal. It goes in and we won the game!The passage above inappropriately switches from past tense--scored, kicked--to present tense--run, strike goes--and then back to past tense--won. Instead, past tense should be carried throughout the passage:I scored a goal in our soccer game last Saturday. At the start of the first half, Billy kicked ME the ball. I ran TOWARD IT and STRIKE IT directly TOWARD the goal. IT went in and we won the game."End of section. The study guide was pretty dense so for someone who maybe wasn't as experience in math as me, it may have been difficult to understand and teach yourself. Personally, it worked for me because it gave examples of math problems in word form and taught me how to put those into a math equation, which is what I was really struggling with. There were also a couple typos, even an answer that was 75 when it should have been 375.
This book is really helpful. There are practice test with detailed explanations to go along with the answers, and there are detailed lessons for each topic covered on the test. Between the explanations and the lessons, I feel very confident in my ability to learn the content on the test, and to succeed.
This study guide has a lot of information on the topics on the Pracis test. I will feel very confident when taking the test!
I am currently using this book to prepare for my Praxis Core exam. It was reccomended to me by other students and so far I have liked it. It offers detailed explanations and simple questions, as well as test taking strategies.
