Peru, a country on the western coast of South America, is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and by five other countries: Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia, and Chile. If you look at the topographical map in this book you'll easily spot the Andes mountains, low selva (rain forests), the high selva, and the country's capital, Lima. Most of Peru's largest cities are on the coast while the smaller ones are in the highlands. The selva or rain forest, which "covers more than half of Peru," is sparsely inhabited. The temperatures are temperate in most of the country, but in the "highest peaks of the Andes are snow covered year-round."Peruvians "began forming villages more than four thousand years ago." Among people who eventually settled in Peru included the Chavin, Paracas, Wari, Incas, and the Nazca peoples. In 1532 the Spaniards arrived and "wanted the Incas' gold and land." They fought for control and won it. Independence from them was not achieved until 1821. As a result of their invasion, "about one in three people has both Spanish and native ancestors." In this book you will learn about the different lifestyles people have, their agriculture, their capital cities (Lima and Cuzco), travel, their languages, their homes, what they eat, their religion, festivals, education, music, dance, crafts, business, sports, and you'll learn many other interesting facts about this fascinating country.This is an excellent overview of Peru for the young student. This whirlwind tour of the country has many interesting facts that could easily be used for a stepping stone for a school report. There are numerous informative sidebars and captions that add a lot of interesting information. For example, one sidebar is a fictitious letter from one friend to another. It briefly talks about visiting Arequipa and mentions Juanita the Ice Maiden, a frozen girl who was found in 1995. The story and a photograph are in this book. This is one of many in the "Country Explorers" series. This book is generously illustrated with photographs and includes a map.
