About the Author
Born in Ohio, ALBERT B. DICKAS earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Miami University (Oxford, OH). After serving in the US Navy, he earned a PhD at Michigan State University and then worked in the petroleum industry, where knowing your fossils helps identify important stratigraphic layers. He then joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Superior, where he taught for thirty-one years and founded an environmental research center. Today he lives in southwest Virginia, where he continues to engage in research and plan travel excursions in his quest for new and interesting geo-sites on all seven continents. He is the author of the companion volume 101 American Geo-Sites You've Gotta See, as well as Ohio Rocks! A Guide to Geologic Sites in the Buckeye State, also published by Mountain Press.

This is a great updated fossil sites book with at least one fossil site in each state. Each site is borken into 2 pages. The first page has detailed information, such as directions, GPS coordinates, formation information, tips, and many other details. The second page is dedicated to images of the site and the fossils found there.What I also like about this book is it doesn’t just give fossil collecting sites, it gives information on interesting fossil “viewing†sites where collecting is prohibited, such as well preserved dinosaur trackways, interesting museums, and active excavations, such as the Mammoth Site in South Dakota.I think this book is great for both beginning and expert fossil collectors. Beginning fossil collectors will use this to see what can be found in any state and it makes going out to find fossils very easy. Expert collectors will find this book to be a great reference. I plan on using it when traveling to other states, just to see what cool museum or fossil site is there.This book is a long needed update to the older and outdated fossil collecting sites books.
On a recent trip, we visited 2 sites in VA listed in the book. Directions were easy to find and photo verified we were in the exact location. Both were sites with fossils embedded in boulders with no need to chisel. There were plenty of fossils in the rubble below. We also found large rocks 1/2 mike away on the same back road that proved to be an even better find. We later broke the rock open along cracks and found beautiful 400m yo “butterfly†brachiopod fossils. The book also gave detailed information on the fossils we found that made it more rewarding to know exactly what we were looking at. 3 sites down...98 to go!
Many sites lack anything other than the vaguest directions. Also some "sites" are museums while other are "pay to dig" sites resulting in (to me) a somewhat disappointing mishmash.Still, I am making plans to visit places I would have never have heard of any other way.
As fossil hunting enthusiasts, we bought this book to learn more about where we could see fossils in the US. We have a very fossil-interested son, and this is a cool book to collect locations across the US to visit. A great reference we will hold on to when we plan trips so we can check out new fossil sites!
Some sites are museums, but overall interesting information and a good place from which to start
Nice book for children and adults. Nice pictures and scholarship.
