I wrote this book to help people with hearing loss learn about how to deal with this in their daily lives.I have worked in health care for over thirty years a hospital pharmacist. Along with that work, I have always focused on patient advocacy and safety as well as health education and disease prevention.I have done extensive public speaking on health issues and written and articles both at home and overseas on health.I am now focusing this effort on hearing loss. The people with hearing loss need information to help them in their daily lives also what to ask their doctor or pharmacistAbout 10 years ago, I suffered a complicated hearing loss 5 years ago and ended up having to quit my job as a pharmacist at the University of Minnesota hospital.I immediately began to gather information about hearing. I assembled it and wrote this book in order to help those with hearing loss understand it and find ways to cope with it and improve their lives.More importantly long term, I feel that we need to educate people on hearing and how they can and should protect their ears. This is especially true of young people - concerts, bars, movies and MP3 players are often so loud that they damage hearing. Most people think that it will return -what they do not realize is that the hearing gradually goes away. Often tinnitus (buzzing or ringing in the ears) will take its place permanently.If you are interested in more information about the book, hearing loss or how people can protect their hearing, please let me know.  Readers can contact Monique at monique.hearing@gmail.com

This was so helpful as I began navigating the world of hearing aids. Friends all shared opinions on what I should do, but Monique Hammond has an objective view on all the options as well as helping understand the facts behind hearing loss and to prevent loss. Her writing style is easy to understand and her personal hearing loss story makes her book entertaining to read even for those just wondering about hearing.
Unique, skilled voice.
This second edition illustrates the author's commitment to ongoing research on ear and hearing-related issues. As she says in the introduction, hearing related challenges are impacting more people today and there is an increased need for practical information to explore the current options. The information is easy to understand and the diagrams and photos are very informative. I am often buying this book to share with friends who are starting to deal with their own hearing loss issues or have family members and friends that don't understand what resources are available. It is challenging to navigate through all the information that is available and to form quality decision on services and resources that could provide next steps to action. Hammond helps guide you in your exploration journey,.
I have not received the book.
The reviews, thus far are quite informative and really do reflect the value of this book and Ms. Hammond's work. When you are afflicted with hearing loss, as I am and have been for 25 years, if you do decide to reach out for information I highly recommend this publication for the level of its content, the scope of its information, and the clarity of the presentation.But, let me suggest another direction because of the importance of this particular book. I recommend that you suggest to those in the familyof someone with hearing loss to and carefully read this book. Ms. Hammond's approach is to devote important space to so many of the questions that are raised by both the victim and their family.I did purchase this book through Amazon and actually give away copies when I have some extra copies.This book clarifies so many misconceptions.This book explains the real life damage hearing loss causes to those who suffer. The loss is the ability to understand language.This book talks about and describes hearing aids, medication, treatment options, what audiologists actually do, and so much more.Ms. Hammond talks about what a day in the life of a person with hearing loss is truly like, the fear, the frustration, the irritation, and ultimately the self-imposed isolation.In my experience these are things family members and loved ones want to know.If hearing loss were treated as a disease, which it is not, it would be the most pervasive disease in the United States and perhaps the world.Every family likely has at least one person who is afflicted with hearing loss. In the US Hearing loss afflicts one out of five people.This book gives the victim truly solid, helpful information to cope effectively. This book also gives the family answers to the most important question they have: how can I help my loved one, and how can I get them to help themselves.Think about your own family, think about yourself.I Speak before thousands of people every year. When they see I'm wearing hearing aids, many will come up to me and ask," Who got you to wear those?" The question they are really asking is, " How can I get my Dad or Mom or sister or grandmother ot someone I love to wear them?Becoming savvy about hearing loss and then helping those you love is the greatest gift you can personally give anyone. You'll be giving them back their lives, their hopes and the surprise of their life because they literally don't really know that they have a problem until you help them.
Tinnitus is a condition of "ringing in the ears" that affects life in so many ways. Always hearing a "shhhh" sound in the background. Conversations in restaurants become almost impossible. Frequently needing to put on subtitles when watching TV. This book is helpful because it is both a personal story and a reference book. It talks about the realities of hearing loss based on the author's experience while also providing helpful information on what can be done to address hearing loss. The author is a pharmacist and provides clear descriptions of how hearing works, types and causes of hearing loss, different tests, medications, and treatments. I found this book easy to read and reference. The chapters on Tinnitus and managing Tinnitus are particularly helpful. Comforting to know that people with Tinnitus are in the company of Beethoven. I am more focused on Tinnitus but can see how many people would benefit from the information and resources included in this book and will be recommending it as a helpful resource.
This is a great book. I was interested in learning about hearing loss and the technologies available to deal with it, but needed a book that combined clear explanations of complex scientific material with an engaging writing style that would keep me from falling asleep. Hammond hit that mark perfectly, with simple, clear writing that also captured the emotional rollercoaster she rode as she looked for answers after suddenly losing most of her hearing. There's a whodunnit aspect to the book, as she chronicles all the different causes doctors considered, that made it an easy read. I can now say I understand the basics of how the ear works, and how hearing aids and other related technologies do what they do.
