Mr. James' first installment of the Sabel Security series (5 at this time) was action packed with an interesting premise portrayed factually (or not) which evil plot expands until, in final few chapters, it explodes into the reader as well as the characters.The protagonists are Jacob Stearns, a combat marred "base" hero who is rough, tough, courageous? driven by by a manic compulsion to kill, and he enjoys it in an orgasmic rush? crudely misogynistic in his feminine encounters, he basically wants to screw all the women he meets and teams with on missions (several of which precede the situation here and are left unexplained) until he finds his true love, and he is adept enough, or sparkly eyed enough to sway women's egos and Eros. This is brought out in remembering past conquests, all the women there except one, whose love pursuit takes an unexpected turn.Pia Sabel is a wealthy heiress, former Olympian, physically attractive as well as combat ready, as are all the women, save one. She is the owner operator of an international "security" enterprise employing Jacob's unit. She is a Jacob target until their relationship is molded by her in a strange twist.Both are similarly challenged which condition is their intimate link strangely.Unfortunately, the characters who live are barely revealed, including Jacob, and interactions found in so many "buddy" tales are left for subsequent installments.However, by the end though the reader will likely have connected with both Jacob and Pia and want to continue reading about them.

I bought this book because Amazon recommended it because I enjoy the JD Robb In death series. Uh. No. This is nothing remotely similar at all. Poor writing, weak characters, silly plot lines, bad dialog, and on and on. Don’t bother.

To all action/adventure fans, here’s a great one! Element 42 is an excellent addition to the Pia Sabel series, the best so far.Rather than rehashing the plot, I want to congratulate the author in fleshing out his main characters, Pia Sabel and Jacob Stearne. Narrator of much of the book, Jacob is a slightly crazed, ex-military, special operator with blooded experience in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Some believe Jacob actually is a psycho who craves danger. Beyond that, he frequently has conversations with the god Mercury, who alerts Jacob of potential danger. (With the humorous conversation between the mortal and the immortal, it works). As in the previous book, Jacob is proving himself to be the most resourceful and effective ‘operator’ within the Sabel Security stable.Pia Sabel, strikingly beautiful, heiress, and former world class soccer star, runs Sabel Security. With a sense of justice-based values, she is challenged by the world in which she operates. In Element 42 we begin to understand why she is the way she is. The fleshing-out of both main characters makes us feel closer to them. And they begin to feel closer to each other.What it’s about … In uncovering a plot by ‘One World’ oligarchs to cull the world’s population by way of a deadly drug, our characters encounter conspiracy, deceit and deadly forces at nearly every turn. In the previous two adventures the Sabel operatives were restricted to using drugged darts to deal with their enemies. Challenged by an extremely vicious and dangerous lot in Element 42, they are forced into using ‘real’ ammo, and a lot is expended, indeed. But that’s the real world and some of Sable Security’s most valuable operators have been killed. And, as Arnold S. said in TRUE LIES, the enemies that were killed, “…were all bad.”Element 42 will satisfy the most demanding action/adventure fan.

I laughed out loud several times. Jacob Stearne and his god sidekick Mercury have a great rapport in this book. Jacob's unrequited crushes are a riot and his relationship with his boss, Pia Sabel, is well thought through. In this book a secret weapon is poised to kill millions. The villains are subtle. The double crosses come quickly. I really enjoyed it.

Pia Sable continues to rush to the rescue regardless of danger to herself or employees. I really enjoy Pia's can do attitude and the strength of body and character she has. I always feel more self assured when I'm reading one of these stories, strong women and men who support each other as equals. I recommend this book to readers looking for a well written, well edited, high adventure story. The book was hard to put down. I've read the entire series and look forward to the next book.
