This is John's most personal and powerful book to date. It is chock-full of personal stories that help illustrate what can happen when you start living life by design instead of default. Everyone wants to make a difference in the world, and "Intentional Living: Choosing a Life that Matters," is the instruction guide for how to make it happen. As is typical of John's writing style, he shares a number of simple but very powerful ideas and actions you can take to get some momentum on your mission like; start small but believe big, search until you find your why, add value to others from your sweet spot, connect with like-minded people, and more.I also enjoy the stories he tells about how he came to prominence in his field, and it should not be a surprise: He got around people like Norman Vincent Peale, W. Clement Stone, Zig Ziglar, etc. and invested in their books, conferences and other resources. He was (and still is) intentional about his personal growth and development and he encourages you to do the same throughout the book.
TONS of great insights and tools. The only reason I am not giving this 5 stars is because it's one of those books that you have to read twice. Once to get an overall feel and once to go back and do the "assignments" at the end of each chapter. So many great tips to catapult yourself into a life of intention ... but not something you can just do overnight.Definitely a book that I highlighted a ton and will go back to again as a continue my journey to a new lifestyle.
Vintage Maxwell. I've followed him for years. He above anyone else has helped me develop leadership skills. And now as I approach the retirement years, Maxwell has helped me get excited about how I can continue to live a life of significance. Great read that is filled with concrete steps to reaching your fullest potential.
Although I agree with the principles in this book and already adhere to most of them, I find this book to be a bit idealistic and somewhat condescending. You have to make the most of your situation in life and play to your strengths, which I believe most people already know. The main point of the book is to find you "why" in life. Why are you here, what makes you laugh, cry, get angry about, etc. I think the book points you in the right direction but overreaches a bit in the delivery of what that looks like individually for everyone. Overall, kudos to John, he is a great leader and teacher but this book was exhausting to read for me.
I heard that the #2 best selling book of all time, short of the Bible, is "The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren. However, I suspect this new book just might trump that one. If not in sales, in the impact of the content. Intentional Living. It sounds simple, but how seldom we do it. This book lays out really a great game plan for being intentional. What I really like is Maxwell's emphasis that our story can have an impact on others. And each of us have a story worth sharing. He challenge to us is to take the initiative in writing our story and make it count. One take away I really like (that I'm going to post on my wall) are the "Five Essential Values of Adding Value to Others". It's just a great reminder of what key things we can do.1. To Add Value to Others I Must First Value Myself2. To Add Value to Others I Must Value Others3. To Add Value to Others I Must Value What Others Have Done for Me4. To Add Value to Others I Must Know and Relate to What Others Value5. To Add Value to Others I Must Make Myself More ValuableIf you take time to make everyone of these a goal, how could you not have a story of impact?Note: the Kindle version seems to lack a Table of Contents page. If you are having a hard time choosing between Kindle and Hardback. Grab the Hardback. (Or get both).Enjoy!
The book is helpful in articulating how to go about living a significant life with meaning. There are practical steps and useful examples. The biggest takeaway for me is to live a life of significance one must start small but think big.The book also teaches you to be humble and I loved one quote that says "humble people don't think less of themselves, but think of themselves less." Humility is far more valuable when you have been successful, that quote helps me to remember that.
Once again Maxwell has hit a nerve that resonates with all aspiring leaders, to live a life of significance and to leave a legacy that will extend to many generations to come.I've read most of his books and it seems like each new one is more potent than the one before it.
Maxwell's books are usually well written, full of excellent stories and quotes and also overly long. His newest work followed that same pattern and didn't disappoint. His core message is to make a daily commitment to intentionally make a difference in the lives others and the compound effect of this simple act will lead to a life of significance. Another great book with a great message.I recommend this book along with three others from the same author:Winning with peoplePut your dream to the testEveryone communicates few people connect
