A few months ago I received a copy of the Prepper's Dehydrator Handbook by Shelle Wells from the publisher. I've since purchased the Kindle edition because I really like having it in both formats.One of the things that has always bothered me about the "preparedness" community is the reliance upon commercially dehydrated or freeze dried food. That just doesn't seem very cost effective or sustainable to me. But knowing how to dehydrate my own food and store it properly is cost effective and sustainable.Prepper's Dehydrator Handbook is FULL of dehydrating information and helpful tips. It covers dehydrating fruits, vegetables, meat, herbs and even soups. I found myself highlighting and making notes in the margins for future reference. The second half of the book is recipes for using the dehydrated foods. It's important to use the food you store in order to rotate your supply and to get your family used to eating home preserved food before they HAVE to.The author presents the information in a non-judgey way and encourages the reader to just start using whatever equipment you have, be it an oven or high end dehydrator. There is enough background information on dehydrating that someone who has never dehydrated food can begin and successfully dehydrate and store their dehydrated food.While I think the book's content is wonderful, I do wish the publisher would have used a darker print. It's not so light that it's hard to read, but it is light and for those of us who struggle with poor eyesight a darker font would be nice. The other thing to be aware of is that there's no index in the back of the book. However, the Table of Contents is so very detailed that an index really isn't necessary. I just find myself turning to the back of the book out of habit and being surprised there's no index.I think the Prepper's Dehydrator Handbook is a great resource for anyone who is looking to preserve food by dehydrating. I'm glad to have it on kitchen bookshelves.
Received today. It is printed in very faint, light gray ink! It's too bad that the directions were not printed as dark as the Contents list. I hope that this was a mistake and that the publisher will be able to send out a legible copy that I can actually read and use.
The reason for 3 stars is the print. I don't know what happened but you can barely read the printing. The bold (chapter) lettering is great but when you try and read the chapter itself it's a struggle. Content seems pretty good just don't see how they didn't catch this
Due to life interfering with desires I haven’t yet used the book. However, my daughter enjoyed dehydration quite a bit for all her herbs, fruits, and vegetables that she grows. Looking forward to dehydration to add to my other preservation repertoire.
Great helpful resource. Many new tips that was new information or techniques I have not read in other books. I highly recommend. I purchased it for tips I can use in making my own dehydrated mixes for backpacking. I can’t wait to try them out.
Love the content BUT You must read this in Bright light cause most of all the words are in very faint ink . Looks lilke they were running out of printer's ink when they ran this one.
I should have read the reviews. I had no idea it was so faint and hard to read. Why would a publisher print a book with such light ink. I was so excited to get now wish I had ordered the “kindle “ version instead. It was fast shipping.
I received my copy a few days ago and I have been reading through the book. It has filled in some gaps in my food preservation knowledge. The book begins by explaining the why behind food storage. The natural progression is good for those new to storing a few months to a year's worth of food. Each food type is detailed with how to dehydrate it for best results and what to be cautious about. There are tips and tricks suggested throughout the book, too. But the missing piece to the puzzle was given to me near the end. Recipes that use the actual dehydrated food! I have jars of dehydrated food but wasn't quite sure how to use them in recipes. I am sure I would have figured it out but being one who mostly cans fresh produce, that was my go-to product. With recipes making Fajitas from dehydrated foods, vegetable soup and even pickles, I will be dehydrating and storing more of our fresh veggies from this summer. Great resource for the shelf. I am sure it will be well used.
