I loved this book. A different and refreshing take on the zombie apocalypse. Love the characters and how Alex fleshes them out. I was drawn into it and even though it is horrible situation, I wanted to be right there with them trying to survive. I love that it is ordinary people having to survive an extraordinary situation. I won't give away anything because, I feel that you need to experience reading it. I have already read book 2 Burning Rubber and it is on par with this one. All of Alex's books are awesome and I am happy to have found a writer that combines all the elements that make a good book, great. She hasn't fallen into a formulaic way of writing that plagues other authors, so each book on its own or part of a series is organic and refreshing. Never know what is going to happen,because no formula is being utilized, just good writing and characters.

This tale is another zombie apocalypse but manages to have a few neat twists to it including one that probably has not been done before. The main characters of Dallas and Roper are well developed for this being the first book and their relationship develops quite nicely. The fact that the survivors are led by two intelligent and capable women also diverges from the norm in this genre. Well done! Also, the fact that a certain ten percent of the population is immune to the virus also marks it out from the typical form of such stories. The only thing that's missing is a fulfilment scene for Dallas and Roper as they always seem to be interrupted. Now have two books from this author and two series to follow through on.

I just finished reading Ride for Tomorrow ( Riders of the Apocalypse Book 1 ) , I didn't know what to expect or really what being a gay female lead character in a Zoombie Apocalypse would change a story line . OMG !!!!! It totally does , strong women , love for the people in their survivors group , who become the only family they now have . A lot of action and Zoombie 's . I can't say much more without giving away spoilers, other than I am excited to begin reading Book 2.

I am speechless I kept thinking this could really happen. I love a good zombie apocalypse storyline, but dam this one had me looking over my shoulder at every little sound. I am glad I have this series because I am going to read every one of them. I definitely recommend this book.

If I was stuck on a deserted island this is the series I would want with me for history. Each book includes a timeline, descriptions of famous people, events, artifacts, etc. as well as hands-on projects. My kids like that they use photographs of the artifacts instead of just drawings. I work on multiple Unix platforms all day long. I had never really taken the time to learn about the shells, but I had picked up the basics over time. I knew how to run commands, string them together with pipes, and redirect their output into files. So when I tell you that I started learning new things in the first chapter of From Bash to Z Shell, you will know the coverage is in depth. If you are a casual shell user, or even less experienced, this book has a lot to offer you.From Bash to Z Shell is organized into three parts. Part one is an introduction to shell basics. It focuses on typical interactions with a shell including all of the things I mentioned knowing before reading this book. There is surprisingly good depth even here though and I doubt that anyone short of a power user could make it through this section without picking up a new trick or two. I learned multiple things from each chapter in this section.In part two, each chapter takes a single aspect of the shells and really focuses in on just that. You will find chapters about the startup files each shell invokes as well as shell command histories. This is comprehensive coverage that really gets you to understand how things work as well as how to tune them to your personal tastes. You are even less likely to not pickup great tips in here.The third and final part of the book turns to shell programming. While I suspect that plenty of users interact with a shell regularly without getting much into scripting them, there are still useful tidbits in here for them too. For example, after reading this section, I added some code to my startup file to customize my shell's completion functionality. I can now tab-complete the server names used by my workplace and even file system paths on those servers. This section also has a very good chapter on variables that will definitely help in day to day usage. A couple of the final chapters in here are heavily slanted towards or exclusively about the Z Shell though, so those chapters don't hold much for users of other shells.As the title suggests, the book extensively covers both the Bash shell, which seems to be the standard default on many Unix systems now, and the feature-rich Z Shell that power users seem to favor. Surprisingly though, the book does talk about many other shells. In the first part especially, features tend to be described for more than just the two shells with top billing. This falls off in the later parts to some extent though. Also, the authors clearly aren't fans of the C Shell or its derivative the T C-Shell, so fans of those will want to look elsewhere. Windows receives some screen time, but only from the angle of running Unix-like environments and shells on it. You won't find coverage of the native Windows shells in these pages.The book is quite good at covering the similarities of the shells. They frequently tell you when some command will work unchanged in both Bash and the Z Shell and they always do their best to give two equivalent commands when there are differences. This makes the shell knowledge you pick up from reading quite portable. It's also nice for those who don't know much about the differences between the shells and thus are trying to learn enough to pick the right one for them. It helped me choose a favorite. The only downside of this is that the transitions seem to become less smooth late in the book and I found myself wondering if we were still talking about Bash or had moved on to Z Shell a few times. This is a minor complaint though.Beyond covering the shells well, the book can also help you better understand the design of the Unix operating system. It has some great asides on things like process forking and child process inheritance, special files and devices, and terminal drivers. Seeing these items through their interactions with a shell can make them significantly easier to grasp.The writing style of this book is very natural. That's important since it distills so much information into every page, you could easily begin to feel overwhelmed. Luckily, that wasn't the case at all for me. I found the material to be presented so naturally that I absorbed it with ease. The book also has abundant cross references and a strong index which will make it great to reference later.The final measure of a book like this turns out to be how much it changed your daily work habits. I've already noticed dramatic differences. I'm using shell loops at the command-line now to process many files at once; I actually understand shell quoting and when to use which types of quotes and escapes to get the desired effect; I can easily strip off a file extension or get a directory name from a full path when I need one; I make constant use of the command history now whether I'm searching for a past command, correcting a typo, or just pulling a single argument out of a previous command for reuse in a new command; and I've written a few shell functions to provide shortcuts to my common tasks. I just naturally began doing these things too, I didn't have to work at it a lot. From Bash to Z Shell just raised my understanding that much. To me, that's a big selling point.

Content: After reading the first part I was a little disappointed as the material seemed dated and similar to many other books on the subject. Fortunately, I stuck with it into part 2 which was eye opening. I definitely learned several things even after having used the command line regularly for several years. At times it is a little confusing to determine whether a feature applies to bash or zsh or both but there are many things in this book that I hadn't seen in many other books on the linux command line.Kindle Version: I purchased the kindle version and must caution people about this option. The formatting frequently doesn't translate well and command in a monospaced typeface often have an extra space inserted before or after an underscore, can be very confusing at times.

Starts from nothing, and develops practical examples, and uses diagrams to show how shells fit together. Though the shell versions covered are old now, and in some cases new utilities are available to workaround the "clobber a file being read from" problem—they recommend a tmp file, which is fine, though there is `sponge` from MoreUtils, the shells have not changed substantially, and the chapter on shell completion is much gentler than delving through the shell manuals. The text also encourages testing and experimentation. Highly recommended.

I've just finished reading From Bash to Z Shell from APress Publishing. It's taught this Linux NetAdmin several new tricks, and should be an addition to any Admin's bookshelf. It'll fit nicely next to your O'Reilly's.I initially bought the book to lean the Z Shell (zsh), but decided that I'll stick with good 'ole Bash for a little longer. The tricks I've learned through this book about Bash quenches my needs for the moment. This book teaches you about essential techniques such as CDPATH, History options, key bindings, editing modes, and tons more. I've only read it only once, but I have already dog-eared 20 pages. My ~/.bashrc, and ~/.inputrc are in full swing with many new shortcuts! I highly recommend this book!!

Recently switched over from BASH to ZSH and using YADR https://github.com/skwp/dotfiles for programming in Ruby, Python and Javascript. Definitely made the transition a breeze and learned valuable tips using both platforms along the way.

The go to book for Zsh. The book does cover a little tcsh, csh and ksh but the major focus of the book is Bask and Zsh. The second half of the book focus on Zsh though, I wish it covered more Zsh and skipped all of the bash stuff IMO.

Well-written book. Easy to read, and has a very good coverage of the features of both bash and zsh. From this I could learn quite a bit about zsh and I'm very happy I bought this book. Highly recommended to anyone that spends a nontrivial amount of time on the command line.

A large portion of this book explains what a shell is. What the ps command does etc. I guess I misunderstood the theme of this book.

I am still using this bood and I am very glad I bought it instead of renting it. When I am done I hope to pass the test with out taking the course. I have been working in health care most of my life it seems. So was very glad when I found this book it explains things in every day lang. and makes it easy to understand and pick up the lang and termanalogy needed to work in this field.

This book is full of important, useful and easy to understand material. I have worked as a CNA for many years and then left the field but wanted to brush up on things as the medical field is forever changing. I couldn't be more pleased with the material. Over all I am very please with the book.

I bought this book for a class. It is well written and easy to follow. It does a good job of explaining everything (although in my mind most of it is basic common sense). It also has very detailed procedural pages at the end of every chapter to help you learn the steps you need to follow. My only real complaint is that the tables and "info boxes" and "guide boxes" are both labeled using the term "Box". It seems a little nit picky but, it is annoying to sort out the different "boxes" when looking for information.The service from this Amazon seller was excellent. I received my item in a timely manner and in excellent condition at about half the price that my classmates paid for their textbooks.

The book "The Apprentices" is exciting and full o surprises. Just as good as the first book in the series called "The Apothecary." Even without reading the first book though, you could still understand "The Apprentices, though.This book is about an 16 year old American girl named Janie, who first lived in Hollywood, then moved to England, and then back to America. She meets a boy in England named Benjamin (1st book), and lives a whole exciting adventure with him in Nova Zembla. Then, when she moves back to America (2nd book), and separates from him, they keep contact. Later, Janie gets in trouble, and Benjamin tries to travel to rescue her, without his parents. But the story doesn't go as you expect it, and the whole thing is suspenseful and fun.To know more, buy this book and enjoy its content that will make you keep on reading on and on.I personally loved this book and suggest it for anyone from age 10-12 who has interest in adventure, fun, and, love.

Book 2 of this series changes POV to limited omniscient, which at first bothered me. Once I got used to the new 'voice' I found myself completely swept up in this plot, which like book 1, flies along at a mile-a-minute pace. All the familiar characters 'feel' the same, and a seemingly minor character from book 1 becomes HUGE here, which was a lot of fun to follow. If you enjoyed The Apothecary, you MUST read The Apprentices!

I gave this book 5 stars. It was a really great read. I love the love, adventure, science, and humor elements used throughout the story. I will admit that the beginning of the book is a bit slow but not enough to detract much from the overall quality of the novel. It is a great read for anyone in middle school or early teenage years. I as a teenager found it quite age appropriate and true to the attitude of the age of Janie and Benjamin the main characters. It is a great sequel the the fantastic book The Apothecary. It also leaves room for another installment to the terrific series. Recommend it for anyone who wants a entertaining read.

My middle daughter purchased book 1 in the series for her 10 year old sister for Christmas. She wanted the next 2 books as soon as she finished the 1st book.

just as expected the magic continues!hope great adventures will come next and they will be able to "tame" the world and dispose of the uranium for eternety

I'd recommend this book to readers who are specifically interested in Amanda Beard's experience as a competitive swimmer. It focused on highlights, and was not as comprehensive as I would have liked. I thought it would have more about competitive swimming in general, but it was very focused on her specific experience.

Great book and an easy read. I've been a swimmer my whole life and was surprised at how many aspects of Beard's life I could relate to. The topics discussed weren't always what I was expecting but it gave me a newfound appreciation and respect for Beard.

From the outside, it appeared that Amanda Beard had it all...who can forget the 14 year old in Atlanta with the teddy bear.Looks can be deceiving: this book is about the pain behind a megawatt smile of a champion. It's BRUTALLY honest and difficult to read because it's so unvarnished but Amanda and her co-author, Rebecca Paly, deserve credit and gratitude from readers for being SO candid and telling an emotional story of pain, depression, torment and ultimately redemption and bliss.As a "victim" of Generalized Anxiety Disorder and borderline depression, I found immeasurable comfort in knowing that a TOP NOTCH athlete like Amanda could overcome her "demons" and not just function but ultimately THRIVE!This book is engaging, difficult and HONEST and I could not recommend it more highly!

This book is a wonderful and easy read. As a former swimmer and person who suffered from an eating disorder, this book has helped me heal. Thank you Amanda.

Not for me

I enjoyed this book. You really felt for Amanda, and it was so heartfelt to go thru her tough journey in life... From the same stresses we all have (not feeling like you look "right), to the extreme stress of Olympics and training... She's one heck of a gal!

This was the most eye opening memoir I have ever read. The fact that Amanda Beard was an Olympic swimmer would make one think that her life was full of glamour and happiness. This was not the case as she reveals her tumultuous teenage years to the world. Her life experiences with her friends, family, and male relationships create a unbelievable story. Not only is Amanda a humble person, but she is great in many respects. She overcame great adversity to find inner strength, peace and healing. I applaud her not only as a swimmer, but as a real human being. Thanks for sharing your trials and tribulations as a swimmer and person. Amanda is a great role model and I hope I can achieve greatness as she has. Wonderful job in creating this most memorable and heartfelt memoir.
